If you don't have an existing ring to measure, you're not stuck — you just need a strip of paper and 60 seconds. Here are the four methods that actually work, from most accurate to least.
1 — Paper strip + calibrated on-screen ruler (most accurate)
This is the method we recommend and what our free virtual ring sizer uses by default. Steps:
- Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long.
- Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger — not the knuckle.
- Mark with a pen exactly where the end meets the rest of the strip.
- Lay the strip flat on a calibrated on-screen ruler and read the mark.
Why this beats a regular ruler: a phone or laptop ruler that hasn't been calibrated is wrong by 5 – 20% depending on screen DPI. Our ruler calibrates to your screen first using a credit card.
2 — String method
Same idea, but with thin string instead of paper. Mostly works — string stretches under tension, so it tends to give you a slightly larger reading than reality. Use paper if you have it.
3 — Measure a finger you already have a ring for
If you have a ring that fits a different finger, you can still use that as a baseline. Most people's ring finger is roughly the same size as their other hand's middle finger, or one size larger than their index finger. It's not perfect — but it narrows the range.
4 — Use a printable chart (least reliable)
Printable ring size charts are everywhere online. The problem: printers silently re-scale. Even with "Actual size" / 100% scaling, results vary by printer. If you must, print at 100%, then verify with a ruler that the test square on the chart is exactly 1 inch wide before trusting any of the sizes.
Pro tips for accurate sizing
- Measure late in the day. Fingers swell by up to ½ size between morning and evening.
- Avoid measuring when cold or hot. Wait until your hands are at normal room temperature.
- Measure 2 – 3 times. Take the average. Single measurements are easy to mis-read.
- Account for knuckle. If your knuckle is significantly larger than your finger base, size up so the ring slides on comfortably.
